relaxing hotel in lovely surroundings

Review by Z7724SDsnowdrop Birmingham, Alabama

Lovely hotel, set in tranquil surroundings, old style interior, great food, and service, spacious rooms. Great pool. needs a little updating, staff mostly were fantastic and polite and friendly, but a couple of members in the bar and restaurant were a bit abrupt and rude...

The Italian restaurant was fantastic and staff were lovely we also had an amazing impromptu singing duo. which was the highlight of the evening.

Wonderful relaxing stay at a very charming hotel

Myself and my partner stayed at the hotel for a week, he plays golf and I wanted to lounge by a pool with a book - and we got exactly that. While I was apprehensive at first, this hotel and its staff in particular won me over.

Yes the interiors and furniture need a bit of an upgrade, but it has such a wonderful charm to it and I really hope if they do renovate it keeps that 60/70s country club style...

We ate lunch every day at the Cotton club and the food was good, but most evenings we had dinner in the local town of Alvor for a bit of variety as the restaurants in the hotel were rotated due to short staff. Grill restaurant was quite nice, and loved the old school elements like serving crepe Suzette at your table. The food could be a bit better for a fine dining experience, fish and meat were always delicious but vegetables/garnishes were a bit lacking. But overall food was good!

I can’t speak about the golf directly but my partner had a great time, the conditions weren’t great as I think there were water shortages but enjoyable all the same. We even did the little trail walk around the course which was nice but could see the course and it’s surroundings needed a bit of TLC. Rooms were fine, quite large and a nice balcony. They are cleaned daily and have everything you need including a nespresso machine.

The pool is incredible, absolutely huge and always was a lounge bed available along with fresh towels. I spent most of my time here reading. Nice pool bar too where you can get a cocktail or beer. Grounds are gorgeous, palm trees and flowers everywhere and a lovely outdoor seating area where you can enjoy a glass of wine while listening to the birds.

Saving the best til last.. the staff at this hotel are exceptional. They were clearly short staffed but never seemed to be stressed or phased by it and always friendly and welcoming - from Carlos at the bar, Valter at reception, Marina, Vera, George, Joao and all the wonderful restaurant staff. If penina were to update the interiors and perhaps the food menus a little, this place would be exceptional. But we really enjoyed our stay and are already thinking of coming back. Thank you Penina!

Good to be back!

Review by SueA1961 Colwall, United Kingdom

We were so looking forward to our return to Penina ... expecting the usual welcome, excellent service, delicious food, great golf facilities, a fabulous pool, and a totally relaxing break. We weren't disappointed! It was so good to come back to Penina - only a short stay for us (5 days) but we have returned refreshed, recharged and ready to get back to business...

Thank you Penina for a super holiday.

Wonderful stay in charming hotel!

Review by Stathers East Yorkshire

We have recently returned from a fantastic stay at the Penina Golf Hotel - 2 adults and a 12 year old. Having read some of the reviews prior to travel, I was a little apprehensive and wasn’t sure what to expect but we cannot fault the stay we had and I wanted to share some feedback which I hope is helpful. The hotel reminded me of a country club, it has an old world charm and is full of character and history...

There’s even a piano and snooker table with royal connections. The gardens are beautiful and well looked after. Our room was very comfortable and clean with the amenities we needed - hairdryer, nepresso machine and capsules (replenished daily) and complimentary water on arrival. We had a pool / golf course view which I highly recommend. It was quiet on the balcony - lovely to hear the birds. The pool area was also quiet during our stay - it felt like a spa at times! No bother getting a sunbed at any time of day. I was worried the huge pool might have been too cold for the beginning of June but it wasn’t. We enjoyed swimming and the pool area is well kept and clean. The pool attendants were very attentive in tidying up. We are not golfers so I can’t comment on the course but we did use the tennis courts - easy to book and access. There’s a fitness / walking trail through the golf course which we really enjoyed. It’s about 3 miles in total and takes you through the pine and eucalyptus trees. Lots of wildlife and a real treat at the end…..when you get to the “Championship hole 14” sign, there is a pond with a bridge and to our surprise, the pond is full of very friendly turtles!! Lovely walk after breakfast. We really enjoyed breakfast and the selection is fantastic. Everything including English and Continental items, an omelette chef, pastries, a fantastic fruit bar with nuts, seeds, dried fruits and freshly squeezed juices and smoothies. We never left hungry! We ate in the Sir Henry Cotton bar twice and both times we really enjoyed our meal. We also ate at the pool bar and at Dunas - the hotel beach club restaurant. The beach club and free shuttle bus actually opened on 1st June. Sunbeds are free for hotel guests and towels are there too. There’s a timetable for the shuttle to/from the beach so easy to plan your day. We had a hire car as we love to explore and if you don’t have a car, you’ll need to taxi / bus to Alvor. Free parking for cars right outside the hotel entrance.
We found the staff to be so lovely, helpful and friendly. Ana was very welcoming on arrival and helped me find some lost sunglasses on our last day. Special mention to Joao in the Sir Henry Cotton bar on the first evening when we arrived late and to Joao and Naimul in the breakfast room, who were super friendly each morning and very quickly knew our drink preferences which was a lovely personal touch. Pedro was also very helpful on the front desk and so were many others but I don’t know everyones names! Yes, the hotel could benefit from a lick of paint externally but did it affect our stay, absolutely not. We loved the charm of the hotel and the friendliness of the staff. Missing Penina already. Thank you for a wonderful holiday! It’s just what we needed.

First time visiting… not our type of hotel !

Review by JayneP64 Birmingham, United Kingdom

First visit to Penina, not sure what I was expecting but it didn’t really come up to my expectations. Bed & breakfast with “mountain” view room, this is a room on the front of the hotel with a very busy road. Tip..upgrade to pool view...

Breakfast, typical buffet nothing special, did have to complain one day but everything was sorted after that. They only accept credit cards. No cash at all. I never use a credit card, felt like a second class citizen all week because we paid as we went rather than charged to our cards. Boy did we spend some money. A beautiful meal in the Grill one night was €107, typical lunch is €40. No local shops but we did find a BP station down the track, accessed past the tennis courts and down a track that says parking. We got 1L bottle of water for €2 and wine for €3.60, strolled down there every afternoon to save some money. Golf…plenty of buggies but €45 a day if not included. Resort Course, utter joke played once and walked off. Avoid this one. Championship, lovely course still dry in places but being maintained. I enjoyed it. Staff were all lovely and very welcoming. Our room was nice, comfortable but would benefit from an information pack and a price list for the mini bar. We probably won’t be back as it wasn’t our type of hotel, too far from a beach and local shops etc with nothing to do in the evening.
