Outdated rooms and bad food

We stayed in this hotel for its proximity to Praia da Rocha. The rooms are outdated, the furniture is very old and half board only works for breakfast and dinner with predetermined time slots. The food is really low quality...

Stay away from this tourist-trap!

Shocking noise from rave

Review by bevjones211061 Beverley, United Kingdom

AP Oriental Beach Hotel

Praia da Rocha

What a shock!!

843815719

We arrived at this Adults only 4 star hotel on Saturday afternoon of June 18th 2022 only to be informed on route via our mini bus driver that a 3 day Techno Rave was in full swing and it was on from 3pm-3am on those days of which we had to endure 2 He showed us his video footage of the previous night with full on strobes and laser lighting and noise of decibels I can’t describe On arrival into reception there first words out to us were do you know about the festival Well we had paid extra for a sea view on the front and we were greeted with stages light construction and over 300 potable toilets along with rows of bars and metal barriers We were also meant to have direct access to the beach which is not possible due to the whole are being fenced in so access is a half mile away That afternoon as it started to get going was the worst day of our lives full on noise that you could not block out the horrendous thudding beats We couldn’t move rooms as none available and we were told we had to find another hotel if we wanted to move and pay the extra to do so by Jet 2 No compensation offered then and after a very intense meeting with Ht2 all they offered was £20/£25 jet 2 voucher per night inconvenienced for valid for a year!! This is not acceptable and there is two more as they say festival’s planned but be warned they are full on and as I write this further stages are being built in front of or rooms view for the next two events this July if you are coming over in that month to be aware that these are going on

Lovely hotel in wrong location

Review by cookiesuffolk Woodbridge, United Kingdom

Stayed here for 6 nights, Jet2 having moved us from the very noisy Jupiter Marina hotel in Portimao.

The Oriental is a lovely, quiet hotel, huge rooms, clean, excellent choice of food for breakfast and dinner, plenty of sunbeds, steps down to the beach, kettle, tea, coffee etc in your room, complimentary bathroom products. Loads of English TV channels, beautiful decor, beautiful views from every angle, brilliant, friendly, helpful staff, in particular Marco on reception who went over and above to help us. The tiny gripe is the bed was a bit too hard and firm but it's a huge super king-size...

Loads of hanging and drawer space. Good powerful shower.

Now the bad bit: the location.

Praia da Rocha is like a mini Magaluf, more suited to the 20 - 30 age group. The strip is full of tacky shops, noisy bars and clubs, including strip clubs, young men fighting in the street. The buildings are all dilapidated 1960s and 70s tower blocks that should have been demolished a decade or two ago. The whole place is a complete eyesore.

The next place, Portimao, is a shabby, graffiti strewn working town, not quaint or touristy at all. It has a river but no restaurants or shops alongside, they're in the old, run down bit of town. There was nothing remotely pretty, attractive or alluring here. Tried to eat here twice but everything was closed.

Lagos was huge but run down and shabby too. Museum was interesting.

The best place was Alvor. Quaint, well kept, scenic, pretty harbour with restaurants around it, although even here, the abundance of Irish bars detracted somewhat from the ambience.

So, lovely hotel but dreadful resort/area. Will never return to the Algarve if this is any indication of what to expect.

a week in he sun

Review by Daniel R Falkirk, United Kingdom

Let me start by saying the reception staff were great. The hotel is lovely. There are however issues the first is the sea view rooms with 6 on the door,, these rooms smell...

When I complained I was advised it was a tidal problem. Well unless the tides in Portugal are 4 to 5 times a day they lied. DO NOT GET THESE ROOMS.
The food was good for half board however the dinning room staff need to cheer themselves up. Order wine and you may get it by the main course. As I said the food was good but the turnover of empty platters was not good. To be fair there did not seem to be anywhere enough staff. It was a pity as this is a nice hotel with nice grounds and decent food. the views were amazing. Having said all that would I go back certainly not if it meant a room on the bottom floor with the sewers. if it was a good price I might go back. Please beware the rooms I mentioned they really smell and management don’t appear to care.
