Pestana Vila Sol Golf and Resort Hotel

TripAdvisor Review
Portugal, Europe
Vilamoura

This contemporary style luxury hotel is ideal for golf enthusiasts, just a few steps from and overlooking the world-renowned 27-hole golf course of Vila Sol, designed by British architect Donald Steel. Several other golf courses are within easy reach, Vilamoura with its elegant marina and the casino is just a few minutes by car. The international airport of Faro can be reached within a short drive.

Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.

Pestana Vila Sol

Stayed here for a week and the facilities are excellent, staff are lovely. Hotel is clean and well maintained. The location is good, the marina (where all the eating places are) is reachable by 10 minute taxi.

The one thing we struggled with however, was the dinner...

We booked half board and the buffet choices weren’t great, especially if you’re vegetarian. The menus at the pool bar and prime bar were very good but the green pines restaurant just felt overpriced for the quality and variety of the food on offer. I would visit again but I would book bed and breakfast and pop down to the marina for dinners each night.

Not for us

Review by Linda M Telford, United Kingdom

Staff are very helpful and lovely. Room was fine, but resort is in the middle of nowhere. No shops, restaurants or entertainment nearby...

Car is required or taxis that soon mount up. Felt totally cut off and obliged to buy food from pool bar as nowhere else to go. Had just been in Madeira 3 weeks ago at a Pestana resort and was shocked to find that a jug of sangria in Madeira that was €11 was €21 in Vila Sol. Breakfast hot food was cold and limited choice. Limited entertainment at night and totally nothing during day. They used to have shuttle buses into Vilamoura but have stopped them. As I say not for us.

Wouldn't go back

Review by Venture68010307522 St Just, United Kingdom

This is first and foremost a golf hotel. Outside of this facilities are limited and costs of bottled water at nearly 5 Euros per bottle, extorniate. The shop in the hotel is now closed and there is no transport to take you anywhere...

Taxis from the hotel are at least 12 euros into Villamoura, so factor that in. Ubers may be a little cheaper. We had to move on day 2 because our room had an adjoining door into the next apartment where a distraught child was running around screaming from 5am. The beach towels are old and ragged. I noted these are beginning to be replaced as we left.

The majority of bar staff don't speak English and look pretty miserable, so youu are left at bar aimlessly trying to get someone's attention. Definitely you won't get any service around the pool here.

Just not up to standard and nearly 1800 Euros for B&B for one week, I don't think it's anything like good enough. I should add that when I checked our bar bill on checkout, two receipts had not been signed by our family but had clearly tried to copy one of our signatures. No apology, just basically a roll of the eyes and he took those items off the bill. You could be paying for things you did not order at this hotel.

Hotel surroundings are beautiful and have a peaceful vibe. The place itself is so nice and the staff are superb! Nothing is too much trouble and helped us hiring a car. Breakfast choice is great as well as evening meal...

Overall, would def go back!!!

Great time, some areas of improvment

We stayed here for a week end of may and had a lovely stay. The hotel complex itself is very large. This may pose more of an issue if you are not a fan of walking to your room (unless your based directly in the hotel and not in the lodge style rooms)...

We loved our room, it’s very spacious, the bed is huge and so is the bathroom. The bathroom was very modern looking with a bath and two sinks. The room could have some more modern touch ups but nothing that bothered us. We also had a large outdoor seating area with two deck chairs which was a lovely bonus. The only thing we would say is that that the rooms were quite dark, more lighting would be preferable.

The pool area at the hotel is very nice. It also contains a bar serving food and cocktails throughout the day. We found the main man at the bar great, very friendly and the drinks were really nice. I did try to refill my water as much as I could to reduce plastic waste but no one at the pool area seemed able to do it as there wasn’t the right drinking water available. Having to buy one set us back almost 5 euros for one bottle and more importantly more plastic Waste! Our drinks through out the day were also in plastic cups which I’d love to see paper or an alternative in the future.

When we arrived we thought we had booked half board but after our first night we were told we’d only booked bed and breakfast (our fault!) but were shocked to see that the evening buffet cost us 26 euros each plus drinks as they weren’t included. After spending around £800 staying here we don’t think it would be a big ask to at least provide water in the evenings. As well as this, I don’t particularly eat a lot, definitely not 26 euros worth so would of loved to have seen some other options for the evenings. However saying this we did love the food there and really looked forward to our morning and evening meals. The other thing I would add is perhaps some more vegetarian options for the hot meals as I don’t eat much meat. Not the best coffee (mornings) but everything else was delicious!

In terms of location the hotel is ideally situated close to the airport (approx 25mins) and to Vilamoura (5mins in Uber cost around 5 euros each way). Albufeira is also accessible (approx 20 mins). We hired a moped and went all the way down to the Benagil Caves for 40 euros.

To conclude, we found this a lovely 4 star hotel. The staff were all lovely and helpful. The area is ideal and the food/rooms are nice also. We would definitely recommend it and would come back here to stay. Just a heads up that an Uber or two may be in order if your planning on travelling around the Algarve !
